Vitamin C, also known as Ascorbic Acid is a water soluble vitamin. We know how important Vitamin C is inside our bodies and the same can be said for our skin. I'm here to unpack Vitamin C and how your radiance can be levelled up!

Vitamin C: Radiance Levelled Up
Why is Radiance so important? And how does Vitamin C help? I am sure you've head the skincare advertisements toting skin radiance and there is a very good reason for that. Skin Radiance is a fancy way of saying that your skin is glowy, bright and free from dark marks. This is a cornerstone of youthful looking skin which is why skincare targets hyperpigmentation, blemishes and dark marks so intensely. There are a few ways you can level up your skins radiance, making sure that you exfoliate, using retinol or BHA or AHA on your skin, making sure you are hydrated and protected against environmental damage. This is where Vitamin C comes in.
Skin Brightening:
Vitamin C truly is the YAS QUEEN of skincare actives. Vitamin C assists with melanin synthesis which is what causes dark marks that are sometimes caused by acne, the sun, age or environmental stressors. Vitamin C helps with hyperpigmentation, blemishes, dark marks also known as melasma and this leads to a more even skin tone. Vitamin C also helps my smoothing out the surface of our skin, reducing dullness and this all helps with radiance. Vitamin C is also able to reduce inflammation in the skin which is useful for acne prone skin. No one wants red and inflamed skin.
Collagen Production:
Collagen is an essential protein which is found in the dermal layer of our skin. It is responsible for skins firmness and elasticity. As we age, collagen is one of the first things to go which leads to a loss of mass in the dermal layer which means that wrinkles are not only more pronounced, but skin has less resilience as it has less elastin and therefore elasticity. Vitamin C stimulates collagen synthesis which means there is more elasticity and structural integrity of the skin is more robust leading to less fine lines and wrinkles.
Hydration:
Vitamin C promotes hydration by decreasing transepidermal waterloss. This means that Vitamin C helps your skin retain moisture and improves your skins barrier which leads to greater resilience to environmental stressors. More moisture in your skin means that your skin is plumper and firmer and can more easily handle what life throws your way every day. As an added bonus, Vitamin C leaves your skin softer and more supple.
Protects Against Sun Damage:
There is no substitution for being sun smart. SPF should be an integral part of all skincare routines and should be reapplied throughout the day. But if you cant do that, and hugging the shadows like a baby goth isn't an option either, then Vitamin C applied topically may be able to help you. Studies have shown that Vitamin C is lower in photodamaged, mature skin. According to Healthline, "Sun damage is caused by molecules called free radicals. These are atoms with a missing electron. Free radicalsTrusted Source search for other atoms from which they can “steal” an electron — and this can lead to significant damage to the skin. Vitamin C is rich in antioxidants. Antioxidants protect healthy skin cells by “giving” these free radicals an electron, rendering them harmless."
Vitamin C is an incredibly powerful skincare active which is why it is the go to for so many people looking to level up their skin and why it is so popular throughout the world in skincare products.
