Glycolic Acid: Say Yes to the Glow

Glycolic Acid is an Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHA). I'm sure you've seen it, literally everywhere. The wonder acronym that promises results. And we're here to tell you all about it.

Glycolic Acid in Skincare

Glycolic Acid Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHA)

Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHA) is a term used to describe natural acids which can be found in foods. Glycolic Acid comes from Sugar Cane (no wonder it is so amazing!). It is a super small molecule that is able to deeply penetrate skin because it is so easily absorbed and it has a wide range of benefits.

Glycolic Acid and Anti Aging

Glycolic Acid, as we have mentioned, is a small molecule that is easily absorbed by skin and can deeply penetrate for targeted results. Glycolic Acid stimulates cellular activity increasing the rate of cell turn over which means that new skin is hastened to the surface of skin. This not only had the effect of an exfoliant, but it also hydrates and brightens skin which overall improves skin tone. This is a cornerstone of more youthful looking skin.

Glycolic Acid as a Chemical Exfoliant

It sounds scary but really it should be. Chemical exfoliants work a little differently to physical exfoliators. Physical exfoliators use a mechanical action to rid skin of dead skin cells whereas a chemical exfoliant dissolves the bonds between dead skin cells. This means that Glycolic Acid is able to clear away dead skin cells leading to better overall skin conditioning. Better skin conditioning means better skin tone and this ramps up skins radiance. When you exfoliate your skin, you prime your skin for products that follow, Glycolic Acid is one of those products, it is able to prime your skin to improve absorption which means that the products you use after exfoliating with Glycolic Acid are more readily absorbed into the skin. Glycolic Acid can also assist with Acne as it clears away debris from the skin that could cause pimples and blackheads while helping control sebum production.

Glycolic Acid and Cellular Reproduction

Glycolic Acid stimulates cell reproduction and increases the rate of cell turnover which leans that fresh skin that has been waiting to break the surface can shine. With new skin growth, comes improved skin texture giving skin a smoother, more refined appearance.

Glycolic Acid and Collagen Production

Glycolic Acid is known to stimulate collagen and collagen, which is found in the dermal layer of our skin, provides our skin with plumpness and elasticity. This can aid in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Glycolic Acid and Hyperpigmentation

Glycolic Acid is able to help target hyperpigmentation. This is because of improved cell turnover. Glycolic Acid can help with dark marks, blemishes, age and sun spots.

Glycolic Acid is also known to maintain skins healthy pH.

Glycolic Acid can be harsh on some skin types so it is best to build up tolerance over time. Glycolic Acid, as with all skincare products, should be accompanied with a high factor SPF.
